Statement in regards to Police involvement in Pride Parade

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Winnipeg, MB – May 22, 2019

Pride Winnipeg Board of Directors acknowledge that its hard for GSRD community member in police force however they are welcome to march out of uniform. The Winnipeg community came together  to reach consensus to not allow police in uniform, a decision that was not made overnight. A lot of volunteer community efforts went in these discussions.

Pride Winnipeg stands by the decision made by its community members and will only allow police in uniform when a mass consensus is reached.

If officers and cadets in the community feel left out, they are encouraged to reach out to their decision makers and pave way for a more inclusive police force. There are a variety ways for them to participate in Pride, for instance, showing support to their vulnerable and socially excluded community member and marching out of uniform, organizing a community event where officers, cadets and other community members can interact, or taking the time to volunteer at the Pride festival.

Pride Winnipeg – The Pride of the Prairies – is one of the largest celebrations between Toronto and Vancouver of GSRD (Gender, Sexual and Relationship Diverse) people and their allies, supporters and friends. Our mission is to affirm the lives of everyone by generating and participating in events that celebrate the history, culture, spirit and pride of people within the Winnipeg community.
