News Release - June 12, 2009

Winnipeg, MB – Once again, civic leaders, members of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered and Two-Spirit (GLBTT) community, and their supporters will raise the rainbow flag at City Hall in recognition of Winnipeg Pride.

“The flag raising is an important symbolic event representing the city’s support for the GLBTT community,” says Pride committee chair Barb Burkowski. “This is a significant part of our Pride celebrations and we encourage everyone to join us
this afternoon.”

The ceremony gets underway at 12 noon at City Hall (510 Main Street) and will wrap up a half hour later. Spokespeople will be available for interviews. A special pride cake has been donated for the event by Chocolate Zen Bakery.

About the Rainbow Flag

The rainbow flag is a symbol of GLBTT pride and GLBTT social movements in use since 1978. The colors reflect the diversity of the GLBTT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in GLBTT rights marches. It originated in the United States but is now used worldwide. Designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, the design has undergone several revisions. Currently, the most common variant consists of six stripes, colored red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. The flag is flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as the colors would appear in a natural rainbow.
