| Theme for next year's Pride revealed |

Download Media Release - 2010 Launch Winnipeg, MB - The Winnipeg Pride committee is pleased to announce the theme for Winnipeg's Pride celebrations in 2010: "Proud to be..." "The theme is a reflection of the diversity in our city and within the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and two-spirit (GLBTT) community," says Pride committee chair Barb Burkowski. "We have always asked people who participate in Pride festivities to be proud of who they are. This year, through our theme, we are asking them more directly: what are you proud of?" Participants will have plenty of ways to demonstrate their pride and celebrate their individuality at next year's festival. They can do so by the way they dress, or by the way they decorate their parade float. Individuals who walk alongside the parade from the legislature to the Forks will be encouraged to carry signs proclaiming the theme "Proud to be..." and filling in the blank to identify their source of pride. "Whether you're proud to be lesbian parents, a two-spirit aboriginal, an ally of the queer community, a gay lawyer, or a drag queen, we each have reason to celebrate what makes us unique and what better time than Pride to say ‘this is who I am' and show our support for one another," says Burkowski. The theme for Pride 2010 was revealed to an audience made up of members of the GLBTT community and media types at the Delta Hotel on October 22. It was an opportunity for people to start thinking about how to incorporate the theme into their plans for Pride 2010, and confirm dates for Pride Week events in June of next year. Pride Sunday, including the rally at the legislature, the parade down Broadway, and the festival with live music and beer tent at the Forks, will take place on June 6, 2010. "Pride in Winnipeg is growing, with bigger and better events planned for next year," says Burkowski. "But we are still a fairly small community made up of unique individuals and that's what we will be celebrating next year. We hope that people from across Manitoba and all the Prairie provinces will come out and show their true colours."
