Events : Pride Week 2012

Pride Week is a 10-day celebration of GLBTTQ* culture in our community, and there’s no shortage of events throughout the festival – from sports tournaments to cocktail parties and coffee house performances by the city’s GLBTTQ* artists. We urge you to support the following community-run Pride Week activities.

The events below are created and coordinated by other community and business organizations. Pride Winnipeg Festival Inc. is not responsible for any changes to, or cancellations of these events. Please contact event coordinators for more details.

Wednesday, May 23

Rainbow Resource Centre Open House/Community BBQ

Come join us at the Rainbow Resource Centre to meet the staff and volunteers, tour and learn about the Centre, and enjoy a hot dog or veggie dog! Donations welcome!

Friday May 25

Pride Flag Raising Ceremony

Kick off Pride Week with this official rainbow flag-raising ceremony at City Hall. This free, all-ages event features brief greetings from representatives of city council, the flag-raising, and free Pride cake courtesy of Chocolate Zen Bakery. Join us during your lunch break and watch the rainbow colours fly high over City Hall!

Justice To Your Nightmare!

Poetry, performance storytelling; come out and share your first date nightmare. Food, fashion or fetish, aliens…X-files, it doesn’t matter. You have three minutes to tell your tale. Costumes and props are more then welcome. Prizes for the best worst story.

Dirty Dance Party

Saturday May 26th

Pitch for Pride Slo Pitch Tournament

Fees include entry to the Bud Light Lime After Party at Club 200 and a chance to win great prizes from Bud Light Lime! All skill levels welcome. Open to the first 16 teams registered. Teams are categorized into competitive and non-competitive divisions. The tournament runs all day and is for FUN but there will be prize packs for the winning teams! Pride Without Prejudice Beach Volleyball Tournament

Come out and join us on the beach to kick off Pride Week! It’s the first Pride beach volleyball event and we’re going to do it in style. Bar opens at Adrenaline at 11 am and we’ll be bringing down the house with DJ Hypnotic. It’ll be fun in the sun all day long. Can’t wait to see you there! Everybody Dance Now! – Family Pride Dance Party

An afternoon dance party for you and your baby, toddler, youngster, tween etc. Come and dance to all your favourite music by some of your favourite DJs! A little bit of retro, old school, top 40 – requests welcomed! The space is ‘baby proofed’ and healthy snacks and beverages are provided for free! This is an event geared towards families and as such you do need to have a youngster with you and all young folks need to have an adult caregiver on the premises at all times. Pride Family Fishing Festival

Celebrate Pride by taking part in a day of fun and nature. The Pride Family Fishing Festival is a catch and release tournament open to all ages and skill levels. Prizes awarded in adult and children’s categories. There will be special activities for kids, instruction for beginners, and snacks provided. So pack up your family, friends, and fishing gear and join us at the water. Check the Facebook page frequently for updates as space may be limited. Yoga for Couples

Details: Try a new “twist” on the ancient practice of yoga! Yoga means “union” of body, mind and soul. Couples yoga strengthens the union between two people by utilizing each other for support to cultivate flexibility, balance and strength. Added benefits are increased intimacy, communication and a sense of playfulness with your partner! Come experience this fun and rewarding practice in a safe and nurturing environment. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be going to support Camp AURORA, a four-day summer camp for queer and allied youth. Roll-Out!

Fame Nightclub, Peer Project for Youth, and CKUW’s Queer In Your Ear presents ROLL OUT! Pride’s annual all ages roller skating dance party at Wheelies Family Roller Skating Centre – 1010 Logan Ave. Hosted by your favourite Queer In Your Ear radio hosts, featuring PPY’s youth DJs, and special appearances by the Winnipeg Roller Derby League. This event is free to all.

Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride

Homosexuality remains illegal in roughly 80 countries. In seven, it is punishable by death. It’s time for change. Pride is more than a parade and a party. It is a giant step towards true human equality. Join us for a global tour of Pride celebrations around the world to personally experience the powerful oppression that continues to exist, and the triumphs of celebration. Lambda ProPRIDE Business Mixer

Lambda, Manitoba’s GLBT Business Chamber, and Pride at Work, a national organization dedicated to furthering workplace inclusion, are jointly hosting Winnipeg Professional Pride (ProPRIDE). The event will bring together employees from Pride at Work Canada’s 26 Corporate Partners as well as members of Winnipeg’s business community. There is no cost to attend but RSVP is required.
