My First Pride Story

my first parade was ‘ottawa pride’. i was a member of ‘the childrens aid society’ float, and my young kids were with me. as we waited in the holding area before it started, we walked around and visited some of the drag queens, as my daughters were so impressed with their outfits. they had great conversations. after the parade ended, we were chatting about the experience, and my oldest said ‘there weren’t that many gay people, though.’ when i asked her what she meant, it became clear that she thought that the drag queens were the only gay people she had seen there. it was kind of a shock to me, as i felt that i’d been very open with them about LGTB people… i obviously needed to discuss more. we walked around the festival site, and we met many LGTB people… they learned a great lesson that day.
